Tip of the Day – Play With Reflections - Part 2
I don’t know whether these tropical fronds are naturally gray or they take on this caste early in the year but the entire scene is pretty monochromatic save for the smattering of green water lily spots. I could have tried to shoot just the leaves above the water but I think the reflections that fill in the dark space below make for a more interesting composition.
What many people call ‘The Bean’ is really ‘Cloud Gate.’ The Millennium Park attraction was dedicated in 2006 and measures sixty-six by thirty-three feet and weighs 110 tons.
Its highly-polished surface makes it look like a giant bubble of mercury which really was the artist’s inspiration. Because it’s a big curved mirror, I can point the camera toward high rise buildings in the shade and also include blue sky, sunlit spaces and distorted features.
One of the best things to do in Chicago is take the river excursion that highlights the special architectural attractions in the city. The modern glass and steel towers are huge reflectors. This shot was cropped from a larger (less interesting) scene.
Finally, this image was made at a polished glass exhibit in San Francisco. I have a number of self-portraits reflected off something...and all the favorite ones are distorted or irregular in some way. That’s the ‘Man of Mystery’ that I am.
One more set of reflections to come...ones that are less distinct and more impressionistic.

LOVED this! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, Jack. Must be because you're a reflective kind of guy. The third and final installment will be less clear, so to speak.
